"A Sunday Morning Prayer for a Troubled Nation
Dear Heavenly Father, We Americans are very troubled this morning about the state and direction of the land that we love. In just a very short period of time, America, the beacon of hope for millions the world over has collapsed into a dysfunctional and rapidly degenerating land where hopes and dreams of many have been lost. A country that was founded on your foundation and hard work has dwindled into a mass of welfare recipients who have no ambition, no future and no direction, and many have lost belief in God. Unemployment is rampant, crime is on the rampage, sexual deviancy and pornography are grabbing hold of many, and people who previously had pride in their work and homes are now readily accepting handouts from a government that wants more and more power for itself with less and less liberty for its people. Cities are in shambles, a viable healthcare system is being dismantled, Christians in uniform are being persecuted, and our traditions of patriotism and standing together as one people have been obliterated. Finally, our political system has become increasingly corrupt, incapable of anything except self-aggrandizement and uncivil and even profane behavior to one another.
Lord, I know this is a long laundry list of things, but there are many more that I could include. I tell you these things to let you know that many of us are concerned and aware of our degradation and we want to do something to change things, but we often feel powerless. We often work on social causes and political action projects but we find that the result is generally just more of the same, and that is continued despair and fall of a great country.
Father, I ask you to fill us with the power of the Spirit that we might struggle on and work to repair the damage. Help us to have the courage to face a tough fight, for there are many who will go to untold ends to stop us from doing what needs to be done. Give us the courage of Jesus' disciples, of Moses, of Abraham, and of our modern day Christian leaders who have spent their life for you. I think of men like Billy Sunday, Jerry Falwell, and, of course, my favorite, Billy Graham, who even today at 95 is still standing up for Jesus in the company of his fine son Franklin. Infect our souls with the energy, drive and stamina to go onward as Christian soldiers saving this great land and her people. Help us to live the remainder of our lives for the glory of you, not for ourselves, always putting you first and ourselves second. And protect our loved ones and friends in the storm that is ahead, for I feel that the struggle will be arduous and difficult. But always remind us that with you in our hearts and with actions that please you, we can overcome any problem, any obstacle, always secure in knowing that we will ultimately inherit a place at your table in Heaven above. We ask this prayer in the name of Jesus Christ, our Savior, who died a horrific death on the Cross so that we might live for eternity, Amen."
