A Wilton woman was arraigned Thursday at Norwalk Superior Court on allegations that she assaulted her 65-year-old mother after being confronted about stealing jewelry.
Jennifer Louney, 44, of 64 Wilridge Road, twitter.com/JLouney is charged with strangulation, assault on the elderly, criminal attempt to commit larceny, threatening and interfering with a 911 call. She posted $5,000 bond after her arraignment.
Police arrested Louney after responding to a domestic disturbance Wednesday night at the residence of Louney's mother.
The incident began when Louney's mother returned home and found her medicine bottles in disarray, as if someone "had shuffled through it," police said. She also discovered that a family heirloom -- a diamond ring worth $15,000 -- was missing from her bedroom, according to police.
Knowing that her daughter had a substance abuse problem, she confronted her daughter about the theft and threatened to call police, according to an affidavit.
When her mother picked up the phone, Louney ripped the phone out of the wall and then threatened to kill her mother, police said.
As the argument escalated, Louney wound up putting her mother in a headlock and using her free hand to pull her mother's hair, according to police.
Louney's mother screamed to get her son's attention, and the son was able to break up the fight, police said.
Louney was taken into custody. She told police she had been consuming alcohol prior to the fight and was unfairly targeted by her mother and brother, police said.
While police were interviewing Louney, dispatch received a call from Louney's mother, who stated that she had looked in Louney's purse and found her diamond ring as well as numerous pieces of jewelry that she hadn't realized was missing, police said.
Louney's attorney Wayne Keeney said his client is a recovering alcoholic who recently ceased attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and let her pride get in the way of her recovery. He said the consumption of alcohol led to his client's behavior.
"Unfortunately, when they test the waters, this is what happens," Keeney said.
