Bodycam Captures Suspect Run Down Cop
Sunland Park, NM - A man accused of running over a Sunland Park police officer and leading police on a chase from New Mexico to Downtown El Paso on Friday was arrested Saturday, officials said.Jaime Sandate, 41, was arrested at his home in the 200 block of Polar Court in Sunland Park, officials said. He was charged with attempted murder in the first degree, aggravated battery on a peace officer and aggravated fleeing from a law enforcement officer, documents show.
According to Sunland Park Chief of Police Jaime Reyes, at approximately 8 p.m. Friday, Lt. Arturo Holguin, 29, tried to conduct a traffic stop on a Ford Explorer that Sandate was driving. When Sandate refused to stop, Holguin chased him to a cul-de-sac on Lura Street in Sunland Park, Reyes said. In a video provided by Sunland Park police, Holguin corners an SUV in the cul-de-sac.
Holguin is seen stepping out his patrol car when the SUV driver suddenly backs up and runs over Holguin. After running Holguin over, the SUV flees the scene. In the video released by police, Holguin is seen limping back to his patrol car and calling for backup.Neighbors try to offer aid to Holguin.
"I can't stand right. He ran over me," Holguin says in the video.
After Holguin radioed that two other officers had arrived at the scene to help him, Reyes chased the SUV to Downtown El Paso before pulling back."We decided to break the pursuit off instead of hurting somebody else," Reyes said.
Holguin suffered a sprained ankle but did not break any bones, Reyes said. Holguin has been with the department for five years and has been a law enforcement officer for approximately 10 years, Reyes said.
